Chapter 2

The Colossal Eye drifts in front of you, stopping every so often as if it’s checking what you’ll do next. It doesn’t speak, but you can’t shake the feeling that it’s guiding (or maybe testing) you.

The air is thick and sticky after the rain. Drops slide down from the wide leaves above, and the ground squishes under your feet. Around you are plants and trees you don’t recognize: spiky shrubs, nut trees, and ferns that look like they belong to another world. You can't identify what is beyond this jungle. The sun has just set a couple of hours ago.

In your hands, the map feels strange. It's almost alive. The surface is warm, and sometimes it seems to pulse. You wonder if more Tagalog words are waiting to appear.
